The Sufferthorn Grail
Appearance: In today's world, they call it a chalice, if they know what to call it at all. The grail is a large ceremonial cup made of fine spun material that is mistaken for glass by mortals. Changelings, however, see that the opaque cup is covered in countless crystalline thorns, and grow silent. Thorny vines and brambles the hue of tarnished silver run are wound around the outside, seeming quaint to those who have never seen the Hedge.
When a mortal or changeling is wounded and their blood is caught in the vessel, the Grail
<wether by being forced into contact with the thorns of the Grail, or by other means and the blood caught in the vessel> the Grail turns the blood into a sanguine infusion rich with Glamour. Health levels sacrificed to the Grail are resistant damage; they may not be healed by Contracts or the use of Goblin Fruit. One HL can be converted to glamour as follows:
Bashing 1:1
Lethal 1:2
Aggravated : 1:4
Power ideas:
The Grail can be used to 'pay' for Hedgespinning or the cultivation of Goblin Fruits and oddments by pouring its infusion as a libation.
Elixirs may be made with blood and Goblin Fruits in the Grail for a variety of effects, but those who drink of them owe the bearer a Wyrd-enforced favor as per Faerie Favor merit. The most common elixir allows the bearer to heal drinkers as per Faerie Healing
When filled with Changeling blood it renders the drinker able to access the donor's contracts for learning purposes as if she were of the donor's kith. The bood of one's Fetch grants one its memories..and access to the merit that allows one to swear Goblin Vows/goblin Oath-type pacts with things 'on the fly' I forget the name. Regaining memories of your stolen life in this way refreshes your Willpower pool totally, but reduces your Clarity by one dot, as the memories stolen war with those of your Durane, making it hard to tell, at times, which are truly your own.
Drawbacks and other details: Heavy Clarity loss is obvious, and I've been trying to dream up other effects for it too. I'm thinking that it gradually turns the drinker into True Fae, and grants the Arcadian Metabolism, Long of Days, Charmed Life and Sublime merits so long as the blood of a loved one is drunk from it every moondark. Once this is done, rather than require Goblin Fruit, the bearer requires drinking from the chalice to sustain himself. The bearer suffers from derangements due to drinking from the Grail: I'm thinking halucinations of donor's Durances and other traumas, possibly nightmares, giving difficulty regaining willpower?
The ultimate theme of this item is the abuse cycle: Its meant to be a primrose path straight to monstrosity, despite having a few useful, if not entirely harmless powers. Needless to say, its level 5 at best.
Comments and Suggestions
FrivYeti: I think this is a very cool Level 5 Token, and applaud the concept.
Drawback-wise, I would think that if you're becoming more monstrous you would be less likely to have nightmares of the people you're drinking from. Instead, possibly it goes the other way around - you pick up Narcissism and eventually Megalomania as you gradually just see everyone as walking blood donors for your own thirst.
On the other hand, hallucinations and eventual schizophrenia as bits of the natures of the people you drink force their way into you would make for a very different collapse. Rather than becoming a monster, drinking their blood forces your own out of you. Memories are probably not the way to go, though - thematically, blood isn't usually associated with thought, but with passion. Picking up people's emotional desires and reactions instead of your own is also, in many ways, a lot creepier than just remembering their lives.
